While a student of the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Aastha Bahl interned under Rina Dhaka, developed t-shirt prints for her and assisted her with the finale at India Fashion Week. Post graduation, she worked with Shantanu and Nikhil, and then Aki Narula, learning the mechanisms of the industry via hands-on experience. The little girl has come a long way: her debut in Lakme Fashion Week was as "Emerging Designer" in autumn winter 2008. Today she stands independently with her label "Astha".
"Our signature is creating new surface textures and techniques. We make a lot of tunic dresses; I like experimenting with prints, colour combinations and blocking, panelling etc. We also work with 3D surface texturing, pleating, pin tucking and value additions like patchwork and piping. The end garment has to be balanced in terms of colour, detail and aesthetic appeal," she explains, confessing that she had been inspired by Thierry Mugler, Alexander Mcqueen, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Roberto Capucci in her college days!
Retailing from Pink, Ogaan, Ebony and Studio Ivory among others, 'Astha' has also been a participant of the Femina Clothes Show since years. Recently, she has begun supplying to multi-label stores Aura and Tamaara, and Aastha Bahl is busy researching concepts for the coming fashion week. God knows we are looking forward to that!
